“Can I move up to the next level?” As dance teachers, we get asked this A LOT. When you have been dancing for a long time, it is natural to wonder when you will be ready to ‘level up’ and start learning more difficult and challenging techniques.

It is not about age, years of experience, or even being in a class with all your friends. Assigning a dancer to their appropriate level requires much more consideration. Here are 5 indicators we look for:
- Technical Proficiency: Mastery of current level techniques is crucial. This means not just knowing the steps, but performing them consistently with proper form and alignment.
- Strength and Flexibility: As dancers progress, the demands on their bodies increase. We look for improvements in core strength, limb strength, and flexibility to ensure they can safely execute more advanced movements.
- Musicality and Expression: Dance is not just about the steps. Understanding musical rhythms, dynamics, and expressing emotions through movement are key indicators of readiness to level up.
- Work Ethic and Attitude: A dancer’s dedication, ability to take corrections positively, and willingness to put in the hard work during and outside of class are all important factors. Attitude during class is a HUGE factor in level progressions.
- Performance Quality: Comfort and confidence in performing in front of an audience, as well as the ability to handle the pressure of more complex choreography, play a significant role.

It’s important to remember that every dancer progresses at their own pace. Comparing oneself to others can be discouraging and counterproductive. Focus on your personal journey, celebrate your achievements, and stay committed to your growth.
It is also important to note that your dance instructors are professionals. If you’re curious about your readiness, don’t hesitate to ask your teacher for an assessment. They can provide specific feedback and help you set goals to work towards leveling up. A great dance teacher will always be willing to help you grow and reach your goals! I promise, they know what they are talking about.
In the end, the journey in dance is just as important as the destination. Embrace each step, and remember that the skills and discipline you develop along the way will benefit you both inside and outside the dance studio.
